Assessing Sources

In her lecture about the assessing sources, Amanda Strong, a professor in the

Medical Genetics Department at McGill University and she graduated from

Concordia University. However, she talked about this subject in different areas

for example, how to find the good and bad websites, with a nice explanation to

each supporting point.

Amanda started talked by general ideas and she said the media is not

always true , especially on the internet. We should be careful when we use it

sure it's very helpful and useful and an important in our daily life. But, don't

trust everything because sometimes it could be dangerous , and she added if

we want to use it for a background information that will be much better. She

mention some ways and steps can help us, to know the truth and to find the

reality on the internet. For example, since you discover unclear information

to not use it and you must know from where it come as journal, public
opinion. Also, make sure who is funding the websites and is it something

official or just known sector and she considered evidence in order to deal

with this compound problem. Firstly, if you find a missing number or the date

maybe it's a truth information, but it from long time ago. Thirdly, ask your self

where are the references and does the information updated frankly. Moreover,

the bad or fabrication websites will not have a strong statistic and in this

situation she said, leave it and ignore those kinds of web pages. On the other

hand, you will find an excellent statistic on the good web pages, as the

government or news. Amanda focused on the paid advertising one of the huge

issues for example, she found that some companies are paying to be on the
first page as a result to our researcher. In addition, some of them they put

big flashing pictures to attract us for example, losing some weight or any

interesting topic. So, when you found yourself on this condition go and look

for the sources where it come from. Like when google something *keep in your

mind* about the background information, is it original source. If it an article on

the newspaper or magazine who are the reporter, because maybe it's look very

nice. But, in fact that doesn't give the right information. Finally, she pointed out
that the untruth websites used a popular logo to except more people for

example, CNN or FOX news. Also, she said it's difficult to deal with it, but

"be aware about it" that something very necessary and could avoid the

problem. She ended with an example of buying blue pen either than the black,

to show us how we could trust the positive opinion.

In my opinion it was wonderful lecture and kind of exciting subject and the
presenter was also a good professor. But, as I told my group the problem we

cannot make a presentation it just good to watch it, maybe there wasn't enough

main idea.

I enjoyed at the end and I think we learned from the topic and this experience.
I had two problems with collecting the sources, which I already found them.

But, when I decided to go after I pray it's started to seem there is something

wrong and I'll face a trouble situations . Firstly, after we

finished the class I went to the office to get the library card and pay the 15$
it was closing, because the summer schedule. That's ok I figured to call my

friend in the University and use his card, or even just go to use their database

to print some articles. Again, once we arrived it was closing and one more

time, because the summer schedule. I don't know why?!!! for me it's not a

good reason to close early, yes it a summer time so what I mean one o'clock

is really to early. Whatever, hope nobody be in my situation and good

luck.

The No1 Ladies Detective AgencyBy: Alexander McCall SmithAnchors books New York, 235 Pages, $12.95

THE NO.1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY

This book which is called "THE NO.1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGEENCY" one

of Alexandra's novel. Is an interesting book because the writer become with

new idea, which is the private detective woman by a nice dramatic

story. Her name is Mma Ramotswe and she is an African women, she spent

most of her life alone. At the first few chapters the writer introduced her

father's situation with a short brief about him and her childhood, as she was

an intelligent, and every one loved her. On the same hand, she was also loved

Africa, Mma Ramotswe was the only private detective in Botswana, where she

was born. However, a little deep in her life she was helped her father with his

cattle. He was an old man, so she didn't require a long with him, but the

important thing she took her decision to be a detective, when he was on his

death bed.

Moreover, she was like her father Obed Rsmotswe, traveled from

city to city in her county for example, she attended to the Sunday school until

she was eleven. She went to her father's cousin when she was sixteen years

old, a new place , because he wanted for her to be there, and she was given a job

in the office of the bus company. In addition, here was the one her initial

issues , when she found about the employer who was cheated to her cousin,

and stole some money from the bus company. At that time she traveled

up to Mochudi, every weekend by one of the cousin's husband's buses, and

visited her father.

Once on a bus on the way from Mochudi, she had met

Note Mokoti, who was a musician and he became her boyfriend. With passing

of days, she married this man. But, it wasn't a good relationship, so later they got

divorced, however. In the mid of the book, the writer started tell us about how

she faced the problems and how she solved with her clients. Mma Ramotswe,

always tried to find the truth for example, she began with an issue

about missing husbands. Also, there were many solutions she was who figured

out about it and that's why this novel has only one main character.

In my opinion, it's a nice book if we except it as a novel I'm talking here

about some unimportant details. But, at the end maybe there was a boring

information the writer included. I think he couldn't take out, because this is

novel way. In addition, the writer figured out a way to makes the book

attractive for the reader. However, it’s an example about very simple and enjoyable for those kinds
of books, even for a relaxing time.
